Here's the thing: I don't think RWBY is a very good show. And I don't think Tyrian is a well-written character. But both are the exact sort of squandered potential that results in a life-ruining obsession over what could have been. I developed backstory, character motives, alternate timelines, a complex, nuanced inner world-- for what is, on paper, a very one-note character in a show with mediocre writing.
In my defense, some of the fights were well animated. And he accounts for like 80% of the good choreography in the later seasons.
Not only am I sharing this art because it was one of my most prolific periods as a creator, but also as a reminder of why I create. I do it for me, and I do it because I feel strongly about it. What was rewarding about this period of my life had less to do with the specific character, and more to do with the process of extrapolating those deeper readings, developing depth where it didn't exist before. It's what inspires me to make my own stories. I want to keep this here, to remember that.
I would just put this guy in outfits for the fuck of it lmao
Did some animations of him, too.
I was a little mad that all the other characters got costume changes between seasons to suit the climate, but he didn't-- so I designed an outfit for the desert area the show was headed towards.
I also designed an outfit for another character he worked with that I also felt was sort of shafted (for different reasons).
Sometimes I drew him as a small bastard like this. It's fun because he's so expressive.
This guy's already got some gnarly scars in his design, so I often wondered if he had more.
From the backstory I gave him.
An alt design I did for him-- Another character in the show had a monster limb grafted onto their body that was slowly consuming them. Since Tyrian had his stinger severed, I toyed with the idea of him getting the stinger of a Deathstalker (one of the types of creature) grafted onto him in a similar manner, and how it might affect him physically.
If you've read this far: thanks for sticking around!
